Mango Banana Smoothie

Mango Banana Smoothie in a glass with a straw in it with an umbrella, sitting on a cutting board with a banana next to it

If you have kids, then you know how much they love fruit! It’s like all they want to eat, that or just something sweet in general! We usually always have a bunch of fresh fruit on hand and whatever the kids don’t eat up right away gets tossed into the freezer to make smoothies! This Mango Banana Smoothie was the perfect little breakfast for me and my kids! It was creamy, sweet, and those little notes of honey and lime in there really brought it all together! This was so easy to make, and the kids loved it! And since it’s healthy, I don’t even mind that they ask for smoothies every single morning now! They’re fun to make and they can be anything you want! Breakfast, snack, brunch, dessert – it all fits!

So, when did smoothies become a thing?

Smoothies have been around for centuries, but they were especially popular in tropical regions like South America! Indigenous communities would mash fruits like pineapple, mango, and bananas and combine them with water or milk to create drinks packed with flavor and nutrients! The first electric blender wasn’t invented until the 1920’s anyway, so smoothies wouldn’t have been super practical to make regularly.

By the 1970’s in Louisiana, a man named Steve Kuhnau was working his usual spot at the soda fountain when he decided to start experimenting with some of the fruity flavors there! He was lactose intolerant, so he was hoping to make some sort of milkshake alternative. He combined fruits, vegetables, vitamins, and protein powder – which ultimately led to the founding of “The Smoothie King,” which was one of the very first smoothie chains ever! By the 1980’s the term “smoothie” was appearing in trademarks and recipes across the globe! Pretty interesting stuff!

Did you know?

Mangoes have been around for more than 4,000 years! This makes them one of the oldest known fruits in the world with India being the largest producer! Mangoes are super healthy for you! They have over 20 different vitamins and minerals in just one mango alone! Mangoes also belong to the same family as poison ivy – but are not poisonous to humans at all! Isn’t that interesting?!

Bananas are another force to be reckoned with due to their affordability, large amounts of potassium, and versatility in the kitchen! These neat little fruits are classified as a berry and are naturally curved due to them growing up towards the sun! Super fun!

What ingredients do I need to make this?

Banana
Frozen Mango
Yogurt
Milk
Honey
Lime Juice

What equipment do I need?

How do I make it?

The first thing you’ll want to do is wash and juice your lime. You’ll only need about a wedge squeeze amount for this smoothie! You could also swap it out for bottled lime juice if you don’t have fresh lime!

Next, peel and slice the banana and get all of your other ingredients out.

Tips:

  • If you don’t have frozen mango, you can use fresh! And vice versa with the banana! As long as one of our fruits is frozen here, then we will get that almost ice-creamy smoothie texture!
  • If you only have fresh fruit and no frozen fruit, simply freeze whatever fruit you want for 4 hours, then make the smoothie! Of course, you’ll want to make sure it’s a freezer friendly fruit, unlike apples and oranges. I would also not recommend using ice or it’ll be more like a slushy.
  • You could substitute the lime juice for lemon, even orange juice would work!
  • I used a vanilla yogurt here, but you could also use plain or Greek. I would then add in a tsp of vanilla or bump up the honey to balance out the flavors and bring some sweetness to the smoothie!
