Did you know?
Grilled cheese is like, really old! People have been melting cheese on bread since ancient Rome! And the OG version actually didn’t have a top slice. Isn’t that interesting?!
The American grilled cheese became popular in the 1920’s when sliced bread and processed cheese became widely available and to this day, this sandwich is still regularly made and loved all around the globe!
What ingredients to I need?
Leftover Pulled Pork
Whole Wheat Bread
Shredded Mozzarella
Shredded Cheddar
Kraft Cheese Slices
Red Onion
Butter
Optional garnishes:
Cilantro
How do I make Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese?
Butter all slices of bread on one side, set aside until ready to use. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Place pork and red onion in the pan in a single layer to crisp, flipping continuously with a tong to ensure it doesn’t crisp TOO much or burn. When the pork is to desired crispiness, remove from heat. Set aside on a plate and cover with foil until ready to use.
In the same pan on medium, lay 2 slices of bread buttered side down, carefully distribute 1/4 cup of the shredded mozzarella between the two, then lay down the Kraft slices, and stack pulled pork and onion on each sandwich. The Kraft slices help to act as a glue for the sandwich.
On top of the pulled pork, evenly distribute shredded cheddar over the two. Next, top with remaining slices of bread, butter sides up. Cook until golden brown on bottom side, then carefully flip the sandwiches. They are LARGE, so I had to use a spatula tong combo for this! Be patient, you don’t want them to fall apart. Once flipped, cook a little more, checking the bottoms to avoid burning, and lowering the heat if necessary.
Top each sandwich evenly with remaining mozzarella, cover, and remove from heat. Let that cheese melt! Slice Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese if desired and serve with cilantro as a garnish! Enjoy!
