Fruit Salad

Fruit Salad in a blue bowl with a wooden spoon inside, on a wooden table

Last updated on January 27th, 2026

If you have kids, then you know how much they like fruit! It’s literally 90% of what they will eat! This Fruit Salad was so amazing! Of course, I had to elevate it a little bit with some zesty lemon simple syrup and some fresh basil to really bring it all together! It’s even better after it sits for a couple of hours in the fridge! Between my kids, my husband, and myself – this lasted a day in our house! So delicious! This would make the perfect addition to any potluck or birthday party!

Where does fruit salad come from?

The idea of mixing different fruits and serving it together in a salad dates all the way back to Ancient Greeks and Romans! They would toss in nuts, honey, and spices! Fruit salad comes in many forms and Americans have been enjoying it as early as the 19th century, especially when canned fruits became popular!

What ingredients do I need for the fruit salad?

Strawberries
Red Grapes
Blueberries
Kiwi
Basil

What ingredients do I need for the dressing?

Water
Granulated Sugar
Lemon

Optional garnishes:

Lemon Zest
Basil

How do I make it?

Wash fruit liberally, cut, and add to a large bowl. Cover and refrigerate fruit until ready to use. Add all dressing ingredients to a small saucepan and bring to a boil, then turn heat to medium-low and simmer for several minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.

Put cooled dressing in the refrigerator to chill for a while. Mix fruit, dressing, and basil well to combine – be gentle! Garnish Fruit Salad with additional basil and lemon zest if desired! Enjoy!

How long does fruit salad stay good?

This fruit salad will keep for 1-2 days in the refrigerator!
