Mushroom Swiss Sloppy Joes
Last updated on October 14th, 2025
When I die, bury me with…all the mushrooms! I’m literally so in love with them! My husband and our 3-year-old aren’t as into them as me and I feel like I’ve converted them! I mean what’s not to love!? And mushroom and swiss?! Even better! These Mushroom Swiss Sloppy Joes have all the classic flavor we know and love from a sloppy and then paired with those juicy shrooms and the melty swiss cheese – it was the bomb dot com! This was also super easy to make for a busy weekday AND it was a one-pot! This was a cool new way to use ground beef, and it was everything you never expected from a sloppy joe!

Did you know?
Sloppy joes evolved from the “loose meat sandwich” which is a Midwest staple! This sandwich doesn’t have any tomato in it and it’s less messy and sweet than a sloppy joe! The origin of the sloppy joe is unclear though, some say it was created for the first time in Iowa, and some say it was created in Florida! Regardless of where the sloppy joe was born, it’s loved all around the nation and has many variations in flavor! It’s the perfect easy beefy meal that everybody can enjoy, especially kids!
What ingredients do I need?
Ground Beef
Onion
Green Pepper
White Mushrooms
Swiss Cheese
Garlic
Ketchup
Butter
Beef Broth
Worcestershire
Yellow Mustard
Salt
Brown Sugar
Black Pepper
Oregano
Chili Powder
Chili Powder
Paprika
Hamburger Buns
How do I make these Mushroom Swiss Sloppy Joes?
In a large deep skillet, brown ground beef on medium heat until no longer pink. Drain beef and move to a plate covered with foil until ready to use. In the same skillet, melt butter on medium heat. Add onion, green pepper, and mushrooms and stir to combine. Cook a few minutes, stirring occasionally. Then add garlic and cook until fragrant.
Now it’s time to build that Sloppy Joe flavor!
Add the ground beef back into the skillet along with all other ingredients besides the buns and cheese. Stir until everything is thoroughly mixed and on medium heat, bring mixture to a simmer. Simmer a few minutes, stirring occasionally.

Evenly distribute the swiss cheese on the top of the mixture, turn heat to low, cover and cook a few minutes more. Serve Mushroom Swiss Sloppy Joes on hamburger buns of your choice and enjoy!

Tips:
- Chop the mushrooms up if you want or swap out the swiss for cheddar!
- For a spicier vibe, add a touch of cayenne pepper!
- Consume within 3-4 days of making or alternatively, you can skip the cheese step and add it to each individual serving, then freeze the leftovers for up to 3 months.

I love me a good mushroom Swiss burger, so I know Iโd love this! Iโll definitely be giving this one a go โฆ possibly adapted to my Instant Pot.
Yay! I love hearing that! You could also make it in the crock, I just wouldn’t recommend putting the mushroom in, make those separate! Mushroom and swiss is in my veinsssss! ๐ Hope you love it if you decide to make!
This actually looks really good and easy to make as a beginner. I may have to try this.
Look goooood! I’ll have to try it. Minus the cheese.
