So where does Tzatziki sauce come from?
Tzatziki has been around for a long time and of course, it was born in Greece! Tzatziki was being referenced as early as 500 B.C. It’s that old! This tasty sauce was likely created due to the fact that there was a ton of surplus yogurt in Ancient Greece and people were looking for creative ways to use it. Soon the neighboring regions followed suit and that’s when this sauce became a star! What started as an herby yogurt dip is now a staple in Mediterranean cuisine! I mean, could you imagine having a gyro without tzatziki?! That should be illegal!
Did you know?
Tzatziki is actually really good for you! Thanks to the Greek yogurt, this mixture is full of probiotics which help to regulate gut health and boost your immune system! And don’t get me started, I’m kind of a probiotic enthusiast! My whole family takes a daily supplement of them!
Tzatziki is also low in calories, making it guilt free to indulge! Cucumbers are also JAM PACKED with nutrients! They’re made up of 95% water, which makes them one of the most hydrating foods you can consume! Pretty wild, right?!
What ingredients do I need to make this?
Cucumber
Lemon
Garlic
Greek Yogurt
Sour Cream
Dill
Salt
Garlic Powder
Black Pepper
Crushed Red Pepper
What equipment do I need?
How do I make it?
The first thing you’ll want to do is wash and prep your veggies! Grate the cucumber with the peel on it. Mince up the dill and garlic. Then juice and zest your lemon.

Next, add all ingredients to a large bowl and whisk to combine.

That’s it! Chill for 30 minutes before enjoying! Drizzle over a gyro, gyro pizza, Mediterranean bowl – whatever you like!
Tips:
- This sauce will keep for 5-7 days if stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- Greek yogurt is recommended for the full tzatziki experience but if you want to use less, that can totally work. Just up the amount of sour cream to bring in that creaminess!
- You can also substitute dried dill if you don’t have fresh, though fresh dill will of course give the most flavor!
