Shepherd’s Pie
Last updated on January 7th, 2026
Shepherd’s Pie is the ultimate comfort dish! It’s like a mashed potato, beefy, veggie HUG! It’s a favorite for many and my husband was always asking me to make it! This turned out so good! My kids both had seconds, and I had to hold back from digging it out of the fridge in the middle of the night! This one takes a bit more time but if you happen to have mashed potatoes that are already made, it makes the process a lot quicker!
Did you know?
Shepherd’s pie is also called “cottage pie!” It’s Irish but also kinda British! And the OG version features lamb, not ground beef! Shepherd’s herd sheep, hence, the name! But in America, it’s usually made with beef! Pretty interesting, right?!
What ingredients do I need to make this?
Ground Beef
Mashed Potatoes – check out my recipe!
Celery
Onion
Garlic
Frozen Veggies
Beef Broth
Ketchup
Worcestershire
Flour
Butter
Oregano
Salt
Black Pepper
Cooking Spray
Optional garnishes:
Green Onion
How do I make it?
Preheat oven to 400 F and lightly grease a baking dish. In a large skillet on medium heat, brown ground beef, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Ground beef is done when no longer pink. Using a ladle, scoop out excess grease, but leave a bit behind.
Turn heat to medium high, stir in butter, flour, and garlic. Cook until garlic is fragrant, and meat mixture has thickened. Put heat back on medium and stir in remaining ingredients besides mashed potato and green onion. Cover and simmer several minutes, stirring occasionally. When frozen veggies are heated through, and onion and celery are tender, remove from heat.
Spread meat mixture out evenly in prepared baking dish. Spread mashed potatoes over the top, using the back of a spoon to evenly distribute. Bake it! Broil on high for a few minutes to get a nice golden-brown color on the mashed potato.
Remove from oven and fluff mashed potato with a fork to make little peaks. Garnish Shepherd’s Pie with green onion if desired and serve! Enjoy!
