Where did guacamole come from?
Guacamole was originally created in Mexico, but its roots go all the way back to the Aztecs! The Aztecs would mash them with salt, chiles, and herbs – and they considered the fruit sacred.
The word guacamole comes from the Nahuatl term, ahuacamolli, which means “avocado sauce.” Pretty neat, huh? When Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century, they fell in love with this rich, creamy dip and decided to bring the idea back to Europe with them.
Today, guacamole is a global favorite! There are so many ways to enjoy it. Eat it with chips, stuff it in a burrito – I mean the opportunity is endless! It’s the perfect side dish for any party or Mexican-inspired meal!
Did you know?
Hass avocados were actually a genetic accident! Isn’t that wild? In 1926, the original Hass tree was a seedling that didn’t match any other variety of avocado! It tasted SO yummy, and so growers decided to clone the tree and keep makin’ em! Any Hass avocado ever since has been that tree’s genetic clone. And today, Hass are the most popular variety of avocado in the world.
Avocados are also considered a fruit, and they’re SO good for you, thanks to the copious amounts of healthy fats they contain. These creamy green fruits are not only amazing smeared on toast, they’re also amazing for your heart! No wonder we love them so much!

What equipment do I need?
How do I make it?
To prep the ingredients:
To get started on this recipe, first wash all of your veggies and herbs. Finely dice the red onion, mince the garlic, green onion, and the cilantro, then deseed and dice the tomato and jalapeño.

Next, let’s prep the avocados.
To make this easy guacamole dip:
Peel and halve avocados, remove the pit, then peel the skin off or scoop the flesh out with a spoon. Add to a large bowl, then juice and zest the lime over the avocados.

Pro Tip: Juicing and zesting the lime over the freshly peeled avocados like this helps to slow that oxidation process as soon as the flesh is exposed to air. This buys us time!
Next, mash it up with a masher, until creamy. I like to leave some chunks in mine!
Add the green and red onion, tomato, jalapeño, garlic, spices, and most of the cilantro to the bowl, reserving some for garnish.

Stir to combine.
Move to a serving dish, top with remaining cilantro, then serve immediately. Alternatively, cover and chill for 30 minutes to marry those flavors!
To serve:
Serve this easy guacamole dip with tortilla chips, tacos, nachos, any way you like! Enjoy!

Tips:
- Guacamole is best served fresh, but it can be stored for 1-2 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- If you have this sitting out for a while at a party, just keep some lime wedges on hand to squirt in there every now and again. Then stir it up and you’re good to go! This keeps it fresh and vibrant!
- You can also add a squirt of fresh lime juice after it’s been in the fridge for a day or two. This will stop the avocado from browning due to the natural oxidation process.
- If you don’t have tomatoes, jalapeños, onions, and all that on hand, just stir in some salsa for an even QUICKER option.
- In a pinch, you could also substitute the freshly squeezed lime juice for the bottled version.
