Why is this recipe great for winter?

In the winter, I want to use my crockpot all the time! Well…I want to use my crockpot year-round, but especially in the winter – it’s just so nice to dump your recipe in and go! This brings all the comfy vibes and it’s incredibly flavorful and nutritious! This is the type of recipe that just warms you throughout. Ya just can’t beat that feeling!

Did you know?

People have been making stews for over 5,000 years! And they were actually created out of necessity! Leftover ingredients were thrown into a pot and simmered for a long time over an open flame. So, what once was a way to stretch ingredients and feed a large group, eventually evolved into the stews we know and love today, becoming a nostalgic wintertime staple across the globe!

What ingredients do I need to make this?

For the hamburger stew:

Russet Potatoes
Ground Beef
Crushed Tomatoes
Beef Broth
Frozen Peas
Carrots
Yellow Onion
Garlic
Worcestershire
Italian Seasoning
Salt
Seasoned Salt
Black Pepper
Chili Powder

For serving:

Parsley
Parmesan
Crackers
Bread and Butter

How do I make it?

To prep the ingredients:

To get started on this crockpot hamburger stew, first wash and prep all of the veggies. Scrub the potatoes and dice them into bite sized pieces. Thinly slice the celery and dice the onion. Mince the garlic. Slice the baby carrots or peel and slice full sized ones! Then mince the parsley, shred the parmesan cheese, and refrigerate those for now.

Next, in a large skillet on medium heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks and cooking until no longer pink. Drain beef and set aside until ready to use.

To make the crockpot hamburger stew:

Get out a large crockpot and add the ground beef along with all other ingredients besides the frozen peas and the garnishes. Give everything a good stir, then cook on low or high for several hours. Whatever suits you best!

To serve:

When the time is up and the veggies are fork tender, stir in the frozen peas. Garnish stew with fresh parsley, parmesan, oyster crackers, bread – whatever you like!

And speaking of bread, check out this recipe created by my blogger friend, Irina, where she shows you in detail how to make the BEST homemade sourdough bread! Her recipe is clear and very engaging, making this an easy recipe to tackle, no matter your experience in breadmaking! Some crusty bread is the PERFECT thing to dunk in this stew!

Tips:

  • If you want this crockpot hamburger stew to be thicker, you could make a simple slurry by whisking either a tbsp of cornstarch or flour into a cup of water! You could also stir in some half and half or heavy cream in the last 10-15 minutes.
  • This will keep for 3-5 days if stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It can also be frozen for up to 3 months!
  • If you don’t have ground beef, you could use stew meat or chuck roast. You can also make any other swaps you’d like. Baby red potatoes would be really yummy too!
