We love onion in our house! I put it in EVERYTHING – and French onion?! It’s a whole new delicious flavor. It’s like kinda sweet, kinda savory, so complex! This Beefy French Onion Pasta gave total French onion vibes! It was creamy, hearty, and delicious! Those tomatoes in there, that garlic flavor, it was a dish that just brought comfort! Did you know?
French Onion is FAR more than a soup! This flavor has inspired dips, pastas, burgers, chips, pizzas! You name it, I’m sure it can be or has been done using this incredible flavor profile! The flavor from French onion actually comes from the “Maillard reaction” which is a chemical process that happens when the amino acids and sugars in the onion break down and come together again into hundreds of different flavors during the caramelization process! Super neat, right?!
Onions are superior! They are SO good for you too! Onions are good for your BONES, your blood sugar, your heart! They even have prebiotics in them! Oh, and they’re a TOTAL flavor booster!
What ingredients do I need for this?
Ground Beef
Penne
Yellow Onion
Garlic
Diced Tomato
Butter
Beef Broth
Sour Cream
French Onion Soup Mix
Dried Oregano
Salt
Black Pepper
For serving:
Parmesan
Parsley
How do I make Beefy French Onion Pasta?
In a large pot filled with water and a touch of salt, cook pasta to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
In a large skillet on medium heat, brown ground beef, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Cook until no longer pink. Drain beef and set aside on a plate covered with foil to keep warm until ready to use.

In the same skillet, melt butter on medium heat. Cook onion for a few minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic to the pan and cook until fragrant.
Next, stir in diced tomato, broth, soup mix, and seasonings. Bring to a simmer, turn to low, cover and simmer for a few minutes.

Stir in the beef and cooked pasta and cook couple of minutes more until warmed through. Remove from heat and stir in sour cream.

To serve:
Garnish Beefy French Onion Pasta with fresh parmesan and parsley, if desired. Enjoy!

Tips:
- If you’d like a little spice added to this, sprinkle in 1/4 tsp cayenne or red pepper flakes
- For a cheesy and creamy spin on this – shred 1/4 cup of parmesan directly into the pasta just before serving.
- You can use whatever pasta you want for this! Short pasta keeps the integrity of the dish but if choose a longer pasta, keep in mind that you’ll need a few ounces less to ensure an even ratio.
