Mushroom and Swiss Burgers
Well, that’s a wrap. We’ve had our first frost here in our town and that means that soon the snow will fly. We’ve had a couple really nice days, and I thought we better get some use out of the grill before it gets too chilly! Said like a true Midwesterner, insert eyeroll here! I’m totally not down with the cold so I am soaking it in! These Mushroom and Swiss Burgers were so juicy, flavorful, cheesy, mushroomy – they were unreal! These were simple to make, and a total showstopper! Plus, I’m infatuated with mushrooms. Any chance I get to use them in a dish, I’m going to! Those buttery buns, sweet fried onion, everything just came together so well! The family loved them!

What’s the backstory on Mushroom and Swiss Burgers?
This tasty sandwich is said to have originated as a fun spin on a classic cheeseburger, combining two ingredients that were loved in European cuisine! The exact birthday and creator is debated, but this burger really gained popularity around the 1980’s in fast-food chains and diners in America! Chain restaurants like “Steak n’ Shake” have made this burger flavor a staple in their restaurant for decades! That mushroom swiss combo comes from French influence, where mushrooms and Emmental (a type of swiss cheese) are commonly paired in savory dishes and sauces! The mushrooms bring umami, and the melty cheese brings a creamy, nutty flavor!
Did you know?
The holes in swiss cheese come from carbon dioxide released during the aging process! Turns out making cheese is a total PROCESS! Swiss cheese is sort of sweet and nutty, thanks to the unique cultures used in its fermentation! Swiss is known for being great for melting – which makes it the perfect cheese for burgers, fondue, and grilled cheese!
What ingredients do I need to make these?
For the burgers:
Ground Beef
Onion
Garlic
Parsley
Onion Soup Mix
Egg
Panko Breadcrumbs
Salt
Black Pepper
For the mushroom onion mix:
Baby Bella Mushrooms
Yellow Onion
Butter
Steak Seasoning
For serving:

Swiss Cheese
Olive Oil for the Grill Grates
What equipment do I need?
- Mixing Bowl
- Cutting Board
- Chef Knife
- Measuring Cups and Spoons
- Grill
- Spatula
- Meat Thermometer
- Silicone Brush
How do I make them?
To make the burger patties:
The first thing you’ll want to do is dice your onion, then mince the parsley and garlic. Add to a large mixing bowl with the rest of the burger ingredients. Mix with your hands until combined, but don’t overmix! Form into 1-1/2-inch-thick patties, this recipe will make 4. Gently push a little thumb indent in the middle of the patties (this helps it to cook evenly and stay flat.) Set aside on a plate until ready to use. Preheat oven to 425 F.

Preheat the grill to medium-high for a few minutes, brushing the grates with olive oil to prevent the patties from sticking. Grill burgers for a couple of minutes per side, and in the last minute add the swiss cheese to the tops. It’s important to flip only once, this helps to keep the burgers nice and juicy! Burgers are done when they reach an internal temp of 165F.

Move burger patties to a plate covered with foil to keep warm until ready to use.

Now let’s get our buns in the oven!
Butter both sides of the buns and add them directly to the rack of the oven with the buttered side down. Toast those for a few minutes while we work on our mushroom onion mix!
To make the mushroom and onion mix:
In a large skillet on medium heat, melt butter. Sauté mushrooms and onion with the steak seasoning for a few minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat when veggies are tender!

How do I serve these Mushroom and Swiss Burgers?
Lay burger patties out on the toasty buns, add a generous heap of mushroom onion mix over them, add the top bun, and enjoy!

THANK YOU!! Many years ago, when I first started nurses’ training in Canada, I tasted my first Mushroom Swiss burger at the local DQ. The DQ rendition of this burger went through many iterations over the years, and I’ve never since found one that is as juicy or tastes the same as that first one . Yours sounds and looks very similar so I can’t wait to try it!!
I love this! Actually, when I was a teenager, I worked at A&W and they had a sandwich just like this, the “Mushroom Onion Melt!” I couldn’t get enough of them! It’s largely why I decided to make this recipe! So glad to hear you have that same nostalgia with DQ! So yummy!
Haha! I worked at “the dub” as a teenager too! My favourite was their deep dish apple pie – hot with ice cream on top. I’ll never understand why they discontinued it.
Yum! I never got to try that one! I feel like all of my favs are always discontinued too! That’s so fun that you worked there too, I love that 😍
I like burger 🍔 it’s delicious well shred
Thank you!
I love mushroom & Swiss turkey burgers. I don’t eat beef. So, I could adjust the recipe to make turkey burgers instead. Looks delicious!
Turkey sounds like it would be great! I hope you enjoy!
