What’s the backstory on the Cuban sandwich?

This flavorful sandwich idea is thought to have emerged around the late 1800’s to early 1900’s during a time of frequent travel between Cuba and Florida, especially Tampa and Key West, where immigrants from Cuba worked in cigar factories! Tampa says that this is their sandwich, they have even declared the Cuban sandwich the official sandwich of their city! Tampa’s version includes Italian salami, which helps to reflect their diverse immigrant community! Nowadays, there are lots of versions of this beloved sammy made all over the world!

Did you know?

Hawaiian rolls are not actually from Hawaii! These beloved rolls were created by a Japanese American baker named Robert Taira who was born in Hawaii but did not live there when he created these, though of course they are inspired by the islands! The King’s Hawaiian brand is currently based out of California!

What ingredients do I need for these?

For the sauce:

Mayo
Dijon
Chili Powder

For the Cubano Inspired Sliders:

Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
Deli Ham
Deli Swiss Cheese
Dill Pickle Chips
Butter
Garlic Powder

Optional garnishes:

Parsley

How do I make them?

To make the sauce and prep the sliders:

Preheat oven to 350 F, then line a baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup. In a small bowl, whisk mayo, Dijon, and chili powder until combined.

Next, using a bread knife, cut the entire package of rolls across lengthwise, splitting into 2 large halves.

Melt butter and use a rubber brush to generously brush both halves, then sprinkle garlic powder evenly over them. Distribute the ham on the bottom half, followed by the swiss. Bake until cheese has melted.

To dress the sliders:

Take sliders out of the oven and spread the sauce all along the top portion, then layer the pickle on.

Put the halves together. Melt remaining butter and brush it all over the tops and sides of the sliders, then bake a few minutes more. Broil on high until golden brown.

To serve Cubano Inspired Sliders:

Garnish Cubano Inspired Sliders with parsley, if desired! Slice and pull them apart to eat! Enjoy!
