We’re expecting our third and last baby in a few months and I guess that’s her fav thing so far. This Hot Honey Dill Pickle Snack Mix was the perfect thing to cure my hankering for pickles and also cure my never-ending snack attack. This was so addicting, ridiculously easy to make, and super game-day worthy! It’s also family friendly, despite the hot honey twist. Loaded with pretzels, cheese crackers, peanuts, Chex cereal, a variety of spices, and a hot honey glaze – this is the type of mix that you can proudly present at a potluck. So, when did snack mixes like this become popular for parties and holidays?
Back in the 1950s and 60s, homemade snack mixes really popped off thanks to American culture and the increase in families wanting to entertain at home. The OG “Chex Party Mix” first appeared in 1952, and was a recipe promoted by a company named Ralston Purina. The recipe was printed on the back of Chex cereal boxes and was marketed as an easy and affordable party snack.
By the 1970s, many families started to create their own versions for holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. And by 1980, snack mixes became an official holiday staple, with General Mills dropping their own commercial bagged version shortly after!
Did you know?
People have been pickling cucumbers for thousands of years! They’re actually one of the oldest preserved foods. And what started as a way to preserve cucumbers before they went bad blew up into a global phenomenon! Pickles became so popular, the flavor of them has been turned into chips, popcorn, dips, snack mix – you name it, I’m sure it’s been made!
Athletes are even out here drinking pickle juice to restore lost electrolytes in their bodies! I won’t lie…I will drink the pickle juice ALL DAY. In my early 20’s, my friends and I would get shots of tequila and chase it with shots of pickle juice at the bars. The flavor can’t be beat!
What ingredients do I need to make this?
For the snack mix:
Mini Pretzels
Rye Chips
Chex Cereal
Roasted Peanuts
Cheese Crackers
For the hot honey dill pickle glaze:
Butter
Honey
Pickle Juice
Worcestershire
Hot Sauce
Paprika
Garlic Powder
Onion Powder
Dried Dill
Ground Mustard
Salt
Cayenne Pepper
Parmesan Cheese
For serving:
Dried Dill
Flaky Salt
What equipment do I need?
- Mixing Bowls
- Whisk
- Measuring Cups and Spoons
- Large Baking Sheet
- Parchment Paper
- Cheese Grater
- Small Dish
How do I make it?
To prep the snack mix:
To get started on this recipe, first preheat the oven to 250°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
Next, add the mini pretzels, rye chips, Chex cereal, roasted peanuts, and cheese crackers to a large bowl.

Carefully mix with your hands until combined.
To make the hot honey dill pickle glaze:
Grate the parmesan cheese and set aside.
Next, melt the butter in a small dish. Transfer to a separate mixing bowl along with the honey, pickle juice, Worcestershire, hot sauce, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried dill, ground mustard, salt, cayenne, and the freshly grated parmesan cheese.

Vigorously whisk to combine, then pour the hot honey dill pickle glaze over the snack mix.

Use your hands to gently toss, taking the time to ensure that each piece gets coated.
Pro Tip: Using a large spoon to do this could break the pieces in your snack mix! I found that patience really is the key here. Using your hands to massage that glaze onto the pieces as you toss is the best way!
To make the hot honey dill pickle snack mix:
Pour the snack mix onto the prepared baking sheet and spread it into an even layer.

Pro Tip: You probably won’t end up with a single layer because there’s a lot, but that’s okay. We’ll be stirring it often!
Bake for a while, stirring thoroughly every 15 minutes.

Once it’s done, allow to cool completely on the baking sheet.
Pro Tip: This allows everything to harden and crisp up even more!
To serve:
Top the cooled mix with a generous sprinkle of dried dill and some flaky salt, if desired. Serve and enjoy!

Tips:
- It’s really important to allow the snack mix to cool completely before storing it. Trapped steam will make it soggy!
- This snack mix will keep for 5 days if stored in an airtight container at room temperature.
- I don’t recommend using fresh dill, it will greatly reduce the shelf life.
- Want some more heat? Up the cayenne another 1/4 teaspoon. You could also add another teaspoon of hot sauce.
- I used salted butter for this recipe. If you have unsalted butter, just add another 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the glaze.
